Structuring a Five-Minute Presentation
The disciplined architecture of short-format briefings: hook, single tension, evidence, and clear ask.
1. The 300-Second Time Budget
A 5-minute talk allows approximately 650 to 750 spoken words. Attempting to deliver 1,200 words at breakneck speed guarantees that the audience retains nothing. Allocate exact time budgets: 45s for the problem, 180s for core evidence, 45s for the resolution, and 30s for the immediate next step.
2. Eliminate the Warm-Up Parade
Skip generic opening slides listing your name, date, and table of contents. Open immediately with the core anomaly or question that matters to the room.
3. Rehearsing the Hard Stop
Running overtime in an executive briefing is seen as lack of preparation. Rehearse until you reliably hit 4 minutes and 30 seconds, leaving 30 seconds of buffer for natural pacing.
Put This Principle Into Practice
